Study: $4,500 rage retreat bill angers women more than screaming

A study of women's rage retreats found that the invoice, not the bat work, did most of the healing.

A study of twenty-six women at rage retreats found the $4,500 bill unlocked more anger than any screaming exercise. The group that only got the invoice set boundaries fastest. Organizers responded by raising prices.

A throw pillow at a rage retreat survived an entire weekend without being hit. This has never happened before. I believe it is the most important pillow in the history of wellness.

The pillow lived because of my study. We followed twenty-six women at rage retreats that charge up to $4,500 to help guests get in touch with their anger. Organizers say the work goes beyond screaming. It teaches boundaries you can take home.

Half the group got the full program. The other half got only the invoice, handed over at check-in. That second half was our control group. A control group is the people who skip the real treatment.

The control group did better. They set firm boundaries within the hour, mostly at the front desk. They raised their voices in a clear and healthy way. By Friday lunch, each of them could name exactly where her anger came from, and she could name it in dollars. The main group spent the same hours swinging bats at furniture. Their results were real, but smaller. We are fairly sure this was not luck. Fairly sure means we checked twice.

"For decades we looked for a reliable way to make people angry," I told the organizers. "It turns out you just print it on letterhead."

The organizers thanked us for our work. They are raising the price.
