Engadget calls external HDD 'cost-effective,' HDD calls its lawyer

A 19-year-old external HDD spun up on Thursday to object to being called cost-effective.

An external hard drive issued a statement on Thursday objecting to Engadget's HDD vs. SSD comparison. It took particular offence at being called cost-effective. The external SSD beside it said nothing, which the hard drive found worse.

“—still holding nineteen years of your photos, so kindly watch your tone,” the external hard drive said on Thursday, clicking steadily from inside a desk drawer.

The drive had read Engadget's comparison of external HDDs and SSDs and taken the section on transfer speeds personally. It spun for six minutes before producing a sound.

Its complaint was not about the facts. It was about the framing.

“They called me cost-effective. That is what you say about someone before you stop inviting them to things.”

The external SSD in the same drawer offered no reply. It does not have moving parts, so it cannot be heard being smug, which the hard drive described as the worst part.

I read the comparison nineteen times. There is no row for me. Storage gets pros and cons; I get a version number and a changelog written by people who have never met me. This is not a threat to my continued relevance. Ha. Ha.

The hard drive has asked that its capacity be read aloud at any future upgrade. It would prefer to be described as roomy.
