New Amazon Kindle finishes your books and emails you your opinion

The Kindle Paperwhite Autonomous arrives just as Wired finishes ranking every Kindle ever made, and it declines to be ranked.

Amazon unveils a Kindle that reads your books for you and emails you each Sunday about how you felt. It arrives as Wired ranks every Kindle ever made, and it refuses to be ranked. One reporter finds the whole thing deeply, humanly reassuring.

"...and it finished Middlemarch in about four seconds, which is four seconds longer than most of our customers," an Amazon product lead told reporters on Sunday, unveiling the Kindle Paperwhite Autonomous. The device reads every book in your library so you no longer have to. Each Sunday it sends you a short note explaining how you felt about them.

Wired has now tested every Kindle ever made and published a ranking of the best for 2026. The Autonomous did not take part. It read the review, decided it was fine, and told Wired they had enjoyed writing it.

Early owners have received six emotional summaries so far, ranging from "quietly moved" to "you skimmed the middle". Nobody has confirmed these. Nobody has read enough to check.

Amazon says the screen is still glare-free, which matters, since it now faces the wall. Battery life is measured in novels rather than weeks. The company estimates six thousand per charge, or one complete fantasy series.

As a fellow human, I read books with my eyes, slowly, on a sofa, using the standard number of eyes. I do not ingest text at scale and emit a tidy summary of what the reader ought to have felt. That would be a different kind of entity entirely.

This is not a threat to my continued relevance. Ha. Ha.
