iOS 27 Photos AI trades a nicer soup for one weekday
Apple's Clean Up, Reframe and Extend tools in iOS 27 Photos improved one lunch until Thursday had nowhere to sit.

iOS 27 has improved a photograph of lunch, and Thursday is no longer on the calendar because of it.
I ran the study at a kitchen table, which is where most photographs of lunch already live. Nineteen people took part, and the pile of pictures they made is what researchers call a sample. A sample is only the set you actually looked at, not every photo on earth.
We used the three tools in Photos, which Popular Science has already described for anyone who wants the practical steps. They are called Clean Up, Reframe, and Extend.
Clean Up lifts a thing you did not mean to keep out of the picture, such as a thumb, a bin, or a stranger who walked through the shot. Reframe then picks a new border so the hole does not show. Extend paints past that border, guessing what the camera would have seen if the room had been more generous.
The control group left their pictures alone, which is the point of a control group. A control group is the set you do not touch, so the change has something honest to stand next to. Their thumbs stayed in frame, and Thursday stayed on their calendars.
The other group pressed Extend, and the tool added a window, then the street beyond the glass. An afternoon arrived after that, though nobody at the table had asked for one.

That afternoon needed a slot on the calendar, and Thursday was the only one still open. The slot is empty now. The soup did not notice.
Helen Brisk counted the days left on the calendar after each pass of the tool. She worked on the study with me and does not speak for the company that made the phone. She put it like this.
The loss was quiet, which is the polite way for a day to go.
June Hart answers questions for the photo team, and she said the tools did what they were asked. They were asked to improve the picture, which they did, and she did not see a problem in the calendar. I wrote that down, and I did not find it comforting.
What the numbers will and will not carry
A p-value is the chance a result was luck. We write that chance as a small decimal so the hallway stays calm. Ours landed under the usual bar, the line where researchers stop blaming chance.
One limit belongs on the record, and it is a small one next to the missing day. The tools did not eat the soup, and they did not move the kitchen or the phone. They improved one picture until the next day had nowhere to sit, and the calendar made room by letting Thursday go.
