North Dakota Deploys Tiny Cones to Defend Politics Feed

State officials have reportedly deployed tiny orange cones to stop improperly classified news from collapsing the constitutional order.

After a tragic crime report appears in a politics feed, North Dakota creates an absurd Headline Zoning Authority to defend the borders between news sections. Tiny cones, category permits and reflective vests are deployed before Gardening acquires subpoena power.

BISMARCK, N.D.—North Dakota has established the nation’s first Emergency Headline Zoning Authority after a grave crime report involving the deaths of two children was somehow routed into a politics feed, prompting immediate concern that America’s remaining categories may now be completely undefended. The underlying allegations, as described in a published report, are serious and tragic. The bureaucratic response, naturally, involves miniature traffic cones, laminated permits and a twelve-foot map showing exactly where “Politics” ends and “News That Is Not Politics” supposedly begins.

Under the emergency zoning system, every headline entering the state must stop at a checkpoint and declare its intended section. Crime stories will be directed toward Crime, weather updates toward Weather, and political analysis toward a secure containment area equipped with cable television panels and enough coffee to sustain three people interrupting one another until dawn. Headlines unable to produce valid category papers will be impounded in a temporary folder marked “Lifestyle,” where authorities say they can do the least constitutional damage.

“A section label is not merely a label,” explained Brock Ledger, fictional acting commissioner of the newly invented authority. “It is a load-bearing wall in the republic. If one headline wanders across that wall without a permit, the next thing you know a casserole recipe is caucusing, a sports score is demanding committee assignments and the crossword puzzle has subpoena power.” Ledger then placed an orange cone between two computer monitors and declared the border secure.

“If one headline wanders across that wall without a permit, the next thing you know a casserole recipe is caucusing.”

The authority’s regulations require political headlines to remain at least 500 pixels away from local crime coverage unless separated by a federally approved banner ad. Editors seeking a variance must demonstrate that their story contains at least one election, veto, podium, polling chart or senator saying “Let me be clear” immediately before making everything less clear. Opinion columns must wear reflective vests while reversing into the homepage.

The categories are falling

Conservative media watchdogs welcomed the move, warning that careless filing represents a threat more profound than inflation, bureaucracy and self-checkout machines asking whether customers would like to donate money while six people wait behind them. “Today it’s a crime report in Politics,” said Darlene Quorum, president of the entirely fictional Institute for Proper Tabs. “Tomorrow Gardening is reviewing executive orders. By Friday, Obituaries has a Sunday talk show.” And they expect us to believe this is merely a content-management error.

News organizations have begun reinforcing their navigation bars with digital sandbags. One newsroom reportedly conducted a drill in which staff members calmly escorted a misplaced arts review away from the business desk while an editor shouted, “This is not a merger!” Another has painted yellow lines around its opinion section, although early testing found that columnists simply stepped over them and continued explaining the country to everyone.

Officials emphasized that the zoning initiative will not interfere with reporting on the actual North Dakota case, which remains a solemn matter for the justice system and should be treated with care rather than converted into partisan spectacle. The authority’s work is focused exclusively on preventing category migration. By late afternoon, Ledger announced that the politics boundary had held—though a recipe for bipartisan chili was discovered two tabs away, simmering without authorization.
