Anti-road group to drive to rally after Peltola's Alaska crash

The Democrat and her family had minor injuries on the way to a banquet, and a new group says the real culprit is pavement.

Medium shot from behind at blue-hour dawn on the gravel shoulder of a two-lane Alaskan highway with frost on the guardrail, a man in a canvas work coat.

"...and the road just kept going, all the way to the banquet, like nobody in Washington ever thought to stop it," said a spokesman for Patriots Against Pavement, a group founded on Wednesday with six members and one truck.

Mary Peltola, the Democrat running for Alaska's Senate seat, delayed campaign stops after another driver hit the car carrying her family to the Alaska Federation of Natives banquet. The injuries were minor. Good. We wish them a quick recovery. Now the hard question.

Why does Alaska have roads at all? Who paid for them? The federal government did. Of course it did. A highway is just a very long way of telling a free man where to go. Nobody crashed on a frozen river in 1867. I checked.

Patriots Against Pavement wants Alaska to return every federal highway dollar and go back to the Alaska the Founders intended. That would be the one they had never heard of. "Dog sleds do not need Congress," the spokesman said. "Neither do we."

The group will hold its first rally on Wednesday. Members plan to drive there.
