Officials say the road has been ordered off the road, effective immediately.
State officials have closed a nineteen-mile stretch of Tennessee highway after Bret Michaels was ordered off the road by his doctors. Authorities say the instruction did not specify which party was being rested. Promoters are furious and traffic has been rerouted.
A nineteen-mile stretch of two-lane highway outside Nashville has been placed on medical leave. State officials confirmed the order on Tuesday. The road will not carry a rock tour again this year.
The decision follows Bret Michaels canceling the rest of his 2026 Live & Amplified dates. His doctors told him to rest after kidney stone surgery. His doctors also, apparently, told the pavement.
Sources close to the situation say the phrasing was very specific. Michaels was pulled off the road. Nobody thought to check whether the road had also been pulled off the road.
"We read the medical guidance and acted," said Dell Voorhis, a spokesman for the regional highway authority. "The instruction was unambiguous. Somebody had to come off, and the asphalt had no representation."
Crews closed the shoulder at sunrise. Orange cones went down at nineteen-yard intervals. A crew leader described the mood as quiet and professional.
The industry reacts, loudly
Promoters are scrambling. Regional booker Marcy Ferns-Kalb said her entire autumn depends on that particular corridor. She has spent two decades routing bands along it.
"You cannot overstate what this pavement has meant to classic rock," Ferns-Kalb said. "Buses. Merch trailers. That one truck stop. It carried all of it without complaint, and now it needs a period of slow recovery."
"The road is resting. We ask the public to respect that. Do not drive on it out of affection."
The highway authority has not set a return date. Voorhis said reassessment happens in stages. First weight, then speed, then, eventually, tour buses.
Detour signs are up. Traffic is moving onto a parallel county route that has never hosted a headline act. Ferns-Kalb called that route "an opener at best."
Michaels, for his part, is following actual medical advice and taking actual time off, which is the sane and correct thing to do. The road has no such clarity. It just lies there, closed, waiting.
