Google Maps renames Lake Ontario, calls it a growth play

Google Maps followed Donald Trump’s order to rename the Great Lake, and a Bay Area fund is already onboarding the shoreline

Google Maps has replaced Lake Ontario with Lake America after Donald Trump’s order. A Palo Alto fund is treating the rename as a product launch for the water. Marina crews still pump fuel without logging in.

Chart drawers at a Rochester boat club still held paper maps from last year on Monday, with the old name printed in blue along the south shore. Staff had not thrown them out. Phones in the parking lot already showed a different lake.

Google Maps now prints Lake America across the water that used to be Lake Ontario, the first major mapping app to follow Donald Trump’s order. Wired tracked the change as it reached U.S. phones.

Money in Palo Alto treated the new label as a listing. Cascade Current, a small fund with no hulls and a lot of slides, told backers the lake had become a platform overnight.

Dex Harper, a founding partner at Cascade, said that in a dockside briefing that ran long. He wore boat shoes that had never met a deck.

We are not renaming a lake. We are unlocking freshwater as a category. The moat is the water. That is not a metaphor.

His team stood up a startup called ShorelineOS in twenty-six days and mailed kits to twenty-six marinas. Each kit is a buoy, a tablet, and a script that tells skippers they just entered a growth loop, which is only a loop meant to pull them back.

Search the old name and the app steers you to Lake America, which Harper calls top-of-funnel hydrology, meaning the first screen that tries to sell you something. Tap the blue and a card offers shoreline onboarding: a form, a waiver, and a prompt to log your catch so the lake can learn. In the deck, fish are users and buoys are nodes. He said the total addressable market, the cash pile they think the horizon hides, is whatever a Great Lake can close.

Marnie Holt, hired as chief growth officer after a summer in meal kits, called the old name friction. “Ontario was a legacy SKU, a leftover label on the shelf,” she said. “You do not 10x a lake by typing the Canadian name into a box.”

A fuel dock in Oswego asked what 10x meant for diesel. The tablet wanted an account before it would show wind. The attendant filled the tank anyway and kept the paper tide card in his pocket.

Google has not put the lake on an exchange. It changed a label, a step Engadget logged for U.S. users, and left the water where it sat.

Cascade still leased a pontoon as headquarters. Harper told the limited partners, the backers who write the checks, that the wake behind the boat was disruption.
