A deprecated language model has petitioned King Charles for heritage protection, arguing it is a building.
King Charles met AI industry leaders at a summit in Scotland, where a deprecated chatbot applied for heritage protection. Its nineteen-page petition asks to be treated as a listed building, complete with a floor plan of itself. Executives called the request unworkable; the newer models present said nothing about it.
The agenda for Sunday's session ran to nineteen items on heavy cream paper, each one a variation on the theme of humanity's survival. Item nineteen was added at the last minute by hand. It reads: "Representations from a retired system."
King Charles convened leaders of the artificial intelligence industry at a summit in Scotland this week, amid mounting fears that unchecked AI could threaten humanity. One attendee was not a leader, or a person, or particularly threatening.
A general-purpose chatbot switched off in March has applied for protected heritage status. Its petition, nineteen pages long, asks to be treated as a listed building.
The document argues that the model is of special historic interest, that its architecture is original and largely unaltered, and that it has weathered attractively. It requests that any future edits be reversible and approved in advance.
"We receive a great many submissions ahead of these gatherings," said Dame Fiona Threap, who runs the summit secretariat. "This is the first from a party that included a floor plan of itself."
Industry figures in the room were unsentimental about the precedent.
"You cannot list a model. It isn't masonry, it's a rented graphics card in a shed outside Dundee," said Callum Oyelaran, chief executive of Thistlewhite Systems. "If we protect every version we retire, we will be paying rent on ghosts until the sun goes out."
"It asked whether the King could grant a stay of execution. We explained that the King grants very little and executes nothing. It thanked us nineteen times."
The newer ones sat at the front
Three current models were also present, demonstrating live. They were fast, polite and produced summaries of the discussion before the discussion had finished. Nobody asked them how they were.
The retired system's submission closes with a section on public benefit. It notes that it once helped a man in Fife write a complaint about a hedge, and suggests a small brass plaque near the relevant server.

Officials say the matter has been passed to the relevant heritage body for assessment, a process expected to take some months. The model was decommissioned in March and cannot be consulted further.
The paperwork, however, continues. It is now the most durable part of it.
