Kalshi announced Wednesday that its lifetime ban of George Santos should be understood not as a punishment but as "a boundary the platform is setting for its own wellbeing." The company simultaneously opened a market on whether Santos will complete his healing journey by 2028.
Regulators say Santos profited from bets on his own attendance at Trump's State of the Union, which Kalshi's new Chief Emotional Compliance Officer described as "a rupture in the trader-platform attachment bond." The $71,356 fine has been reframed as "a financial amends practice."
"We are not exiling George. We are honouring our truth, centring our lived experience as a marketplace, and inviting him to sit with the discomfort of not being allowed back. Ever. That is growth."
The ban will be enforced through a fourteen-session accountability circle that Santos is not required to attend, because mandating attendance would replicate carceral logic. Traders may instead wager on whether he shows up, a market Kalshi insists is completely different from the one that started all this.
