"...and the receipt was in the glovebox the whole time," a Michigan Democratic field organizer told reporters on Saturday, standing outside a Secretary of State branch in Detroit. Kamala Harris had just walked in with a folder and asked, politely, to return the state.
Understand what happened here. The former vice-president lost Michigan to Donald Trump in 2024. Now she is back, and the party's paperwork lists the reason for return as "not as pictured." It also requests a full refund under a six-day grace period nobody has ever heard of. Just asking... since when does a state come with a returns policy?
The clerk, to her eternal credit, explained that Michigan is not a blender. So the party did what the party always does. It asked for store credit instead. Every cent of that credit, the organizer announced, will now be spent on Abdul El-Sayed's Senate race against Mike Rogers.
"We're not saying the voters were wrong," the organizer said. "We're saying we kept the packaging, and that has to count for something."
Notice what nobody is saying. Wisconsin. Pennsylvania. Do they have receipts too? Is there a drawer somewhere in Delaware... full of them?
