A Capitol mailroom took in nineteen boxes of tissues labeled for committee grief. Senate staff have opened a holding space to process Nancy Kassebaum's historic firsts as unpaid care work. Officials say the chamber must sit with its own past before it can sit with anyone else's.
A carton of nineteen tissue boxes reached a Capitol mailroom on Thursday. The slip named the addressee as Committee Grief.
The Senate wellness office placed the order after the obituaries landed. Nancy Kassebaum had died at 94. She was the first woman to chair a major Senate panel. In her first term she was the only woman in the chamber.
Staff were not stocking a viewing. They were building a holding space. The office says the institution must finally sit with the loneliness it once required of her.
Priya Vellore, the new director of legislative somatics, called the delivery the first honest line item of the year. Somatics, she said, means noticing the body when the body is the one doing the unpaid work.
"Being first is extractive," Vellore said. "The chamber took her labor and never offered aftercare. We are late, and lateness is a form of harm."
The Senate cannot metabolize a historic first if it keeps asking women to be grateful for the bruise.
Vellore mapped a nineteen-minute relational repair hour in a side hallway off Foreign Relations. Senators will name the feeling of an empty desk nearby. Then they will breathe until the feeling has a witness.
Jordan Hale, a floor liaison for institutional accountability, said the circle is not optional for chairs. "Power that refuses to process is just unexamined hierarchy in a better suit," Hale said. "We are asking the body politic to use its indoor voice."
The protocol treats committee gavel time as care work. Hale wants every historic first logged in a living file called the Ledger of Unpaid Witnessing. Entries get read aloud on Thursday only, because other days still feel too extractive.
Aides have already printed affirmation cards that say I see your firstness. Nineteen packs went to the gift shop. They sold out before lunch.
Vellore insists this is foreign policy by another name. "A chamber that cannot hold one woman's isolation will not hold a fragile ceasefire," she said. "Diplomacy starts when the most senior man in the room admits he has never been the only one."
