"...and it went straight in," she told me on Friday. "I didn't even have to bend it." Then she shut the door.
Last month I measured 400 letterboxes and slept badly. This week I tested what goes through them. The NHS now lets women order a cervical screening kit on the app, swab at home and post it back. The NHS says this part matters a great deal. I have noted it and moved on.
I posted nineteen kits to nineteen homes. I also posted nineteen birthday cards, to compare. Every kit went through the slot first time. Every card got stuck. The chance that is luck is under one in twenty, which is the number scientists use to calm down. It did not calm me down.
Nothing snagged. Nobody had to lie on the mat and push.
I want to be careful here. Nineteen is a small number, and I was tired. But a health kit has passed cleanly through a British front door for the first time in my records. The door did not argue. The dog did not get involved.
