The planet's extractable reserves of reasonable doubt have been formally reclassified as depleted, according to an assay published this week by the Institute for Distributed Adjudication, a Providence-based body that has monitored the substance since its accidental discovery in the eighteenth century.
Doubt, the institute notes, is a slow-replenishing cognitive mineral, laid down over generations in thin seams and historically consumed at a rate of one or two units per jury per fortnight. Extraction volumes remained stable until the emergence of the true-crime livestream sector, which the report characterises as "open-pit."
The final certified deposit is understood to have been drawn down during a lunch recess in the ongoing Massachusetts trial of a defendant whose lawyers have argued postpartum psychosis and whose prosecutors have argued criminal responsibility, a distinction the institute says was resolved online, unanimously and repeatedly, in the ninety minutes before the afternoon session resumed.
"We have watched the seam thin for some years," said Dr. Halvard Pemsey-Roux, the institute's director of reserve estimation, who declined to characterise the outlook as a crisis on the grounds that characterising things is itself doubt-intensive. "There is nothing left in the ground. What remains in circulation is inventory, and most of that is held by three appellate judges and a man in Delft who has not opened a browser since 2011."

Rationing begins
Under an emergency allocation framework, courts will receive doubt in metered doses, with priority given to proceedings in which nobody has yet produced a nine-part explainer. Commentators will be asked to move to synthetic alternatives, chiefly certainty, which is abundant, cheap, and available in bulk at no cost to the user.
Not everyone accepts the finding. Sandrine Okafor-Vance, who moderates a 400,000-member forum devoted to case-adjacent stitching and speculation, disputed the methodology and said her community had reached its conclusions "through careful review of publicly available screenshots, which is the same thing as evidence, only faster." She added that her members had generated a great deal of doubt, all of it directed at the institute.
Pemsey-Roux confirmed that the audit had itself been livestreamed, and that viewers had determined its conclusion within four minutes. The implications are, frankly, terrifying (see footnote 7).
