Sandra Wollner's Everytime won the Heart of Sarajevo, but the real story is the trophy going through airport security in a grey plastic tray beside a phone charger. The festival has responded with a three-person Office of Trophy Dignity. The gummy bears in the same tray remain unaccounted for.
A grey plastic tray at Sarajevo airport is now the most discussed object in European cinema. Sources close to the situation say it happened Sunday, in front of everyone, at security lane three.
Witnesses describe a heart-shaped trophy sliding down the belt between a phone charger and an open bag of gummy bears. Behind it, in a second tray, a pair of shoes. Nobody at the checkpoint blinked. Everybody at three film festivals has been blinking ever since.
Some housekeeping first, because apparently it matters to some of you. Sandra Wollner's Everytime won the Heart of Sarajevo for best film, per Variety. The jury, headed by two-time Academy Award nominee Emily Watson, was unanimous. Lovely. Congratulations. Now back to the tray.
Insiders whisper that the Austrian director carried the trophy to the airport in a canvas tote bag from a bookshop. Not a case. Not a courier. A tote. One festival veteran reportedly had to sit down when told, and is said to still be sitting.
The festival responds
By the next morning, the festival had convened an emergency session and created the Office of Trophy Dignity. It has three staff, a budget, and a mission statement it will not read aloud on the record.
Its newly appointed head, Davor Begić, spoke to SnarkWire for exactly three minutes before an aide pulled him away from his own phone.
"The Heart of Sarajevo represents decades of cinema, of history, of feeling. It does not go in the tray. Belts go in the tray. Loose change goes in the tray. Hearts do not go in the tray."
Begić confirmed the office is drafting official trophy travel protocols. Early proposals include a padded case, a dedicated escort, and a written apology to the tray.
The circuit reacts
Rival festivals smelled blood immediately. A protocol adviser who has worked three award circuits, speaking anonymously because trophies are sensitive, was blunt. "At Cannes, an award travels by courier. Gloved courier. The gloves have their own gloves. What happened in that airport was a choice."
Other insiders whisper that at least two festivals have quietly checked where their own past trophies are right now. One of them, sources say, did not love the answer.
Meanwhile the full winners list sits over at Deadline, for anyone who enjoys paperwork. Fine reading. No trays in it anywhere.
Team Wollner speaks, sort of
Wollner herself has not commented, which sources describe as "extremely on brand." A person described to SnarkWire as close to the tote bag insisted the trophy "flew great" and "honestly seemed to enjoy the belt."
The same person noted that Everytime already won at Cannes Un Certain Regard, so the trophy "is not even the only one in the flat." The Office of Trophy Dignity declined to comment on the word "flat."
Airport officials, for their part, seem baffled by the fuss. A spokesperson for the security contractor, Amira Hodžić, said staff followed procedure perfectly. "It went in the tray. Everything goes in the tray. Last month a man put a wedding cake in the tray. We do not judge the tray."
And then there is the footage
SnarkWire has reviewed a description of the scanner footage from a source who has spoken to someone who watched it. The trophy cleared the machine in three seconds. It flagged nothing. The system reportedly logged it as "mostly heart," which several insiders are calling the review of the year.
The gummy bears, sources stress, remain unaccounted for. Nobody claimed them at the far end of the belt. Investigators, and by investigators we mean us, are pursuing this.
As for the tray itself, the festival is said to want it. Talks are described as early, delicate, and emotional. The airport is said to be open to a loan.
The trophy landed safely, cleared customs without incident, and is now believed to be on a shelf. People close to the shelf say it has never looked more relaxed. The Office of Trophy Dignity meets again Sunday. Bring snacks. Not gummy bears.
