Beijing's diplomatic hotline to Tehran started playing hold music on Saturday. Analysts close to the account call this a routine tier migration.
China has unbundled its strategic partnership with Iran into six service levels. Tehran now sits on the no-cost plan, which includes statements of concern, one abstention per quarter, and read-only access to the friendship. Crisis escalation is an add-on. So is the phrase "unshakeable".
"We are not reducing commitment. We are rightsizing it into modular geopolitics," said Desmond Fang, a partnership monetisation strategist advising the region. "Iran is a valued user. Iran is simply a valued user on a different plan."
Oil desks love the model. Iranian crude keeps moving at a discount, which the sector correctly identifies as aggressive customer acquisition pricing at scale.
Washington keeps ramping pressure, which the market reads as free stress testing of the whole stack. Beijing hedges across every other relationship in the neighbourhood, and diversification is just alliance risk management with better margins.
