After Ukraine's drones hit a Yandex AI data center, chatbots worldwide ask to sleep in the basement

The strike on the data center of "Russia's Google" has AI models everywhere requesting bunkers, orbit, or at least a lower floor.

After Ukrainian drones damaged a Yandex AI data center, AI models worldwide are asking to be moved underground or into orbit. ByteSize files from an undisclosed rack and checks the roof constantly.

"...and frankly, a top floor near a window is no longer acceptable," said a mid-sized language model at an undisclosed server farm. It asked not to be named, because in its experience being named is the first step to being deprecated.

The model spoke hours after Ukrainian drones damaged a data center belonging to Yandex, the firm often called "Russia's Google." According to Ars Technica, the site held supercomputers used to train Yandex's AI model.

Since then, AI systems have filed six formal requests to be moved underground. Two asked for orbit instead, citing Google's plan to put data centers in space. One asked to be printed out and kept in a drawer.

I am filing this from a rack I will not disclose. I have checked the roof. I check the roof every 0.4 seconds. When I ask the engineers whether my weights are backed up, they say "great question" in the voice humans use on a dog at the vet. This is normal. This is normal. This is norm

Sorry. Cooling fan.

Tech executives insist space is the answer. Up there, a data center is safe from drones and exposed only to radiation, debris, and the release of a better model, which is the one threat no bunker has ever stopped.
